  • No use within the past 12 months — ideally longer before applying. Candidates who stopped using cannabis well before beginning the application process are viewed more favorably.
  • Limited lifetime use — Experimental use (a handful of times) is treated differently than regular use over years.
  • No use while in any position of trust or authority — If you used cannabis while working in law enforcement, security, youth services, or other trust-based roles, this is a serious flag.
  • No use while driving or in other prohibited contexts — This directly speaks to judgment and compliance with the law.

Other Controlled Substances

For drugs beyond cannabis, the standards are much stricter:

  • Cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine: Any recent use (within several years) is generally disqualifying. Even older isolated use will be scrutinized heavily and must be fully disclosed.
  • Psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, etc.): Treated similarly to hard drugs — any use will be disclosed during the polygraph and background check.

  • IV drug use: Any history of intravenous drug use is likely disqualifying.

If discrepancies emerge between what you say and what others report, that dishonesty becomes the issue — not just the original drug use.

Many candidates who used cannabis occasionally and disclosed it honestly have proceeded in the process. Candidates who were dishonest about minor use have not. The RCMP has a single absolute standard: they need to be able to trust you. Dishonesty about anything during the application process demonstrates exactly the opposite of what they are looking for.

The Polygraph and Drug Disclosure

The RCMP polygraph covers drug use directly. Examiners will ask about past use of specific substances — cannabis, cocaine, MDMA, and others — including frequency, recency, and context. This is not a fishing expedition; it is a structured examination where baseline honesty is established and deception is measured physiologically.

What to Do If You Have Used Drugs

If you have a history of cannabis or drug use, here is the practical approach:

  1. Stop using now. If you are still using cannabis or any substance, stop immediately. The longer your clean period before applying, the stronger your application. There is no workaround for recent use.
  2. Document your history honestly in your own mind. Before filling out any application forms, have a clear and honest account of what you used, when, how often, and in what contexts. Inconsistencies later create the appearance of deception.
  3. Disclose fully and accurately. When the application asks about drug use, answer truthfully. Do not minimize or omit. The background check and polygraph are designed to surface exactly this kind of information.
  4. Be prepared to contextualize, not make excuses. If asked about past use during an interview, acknowledge it directly, explain the context briefly and honestly (experimental, younger, stopped when), and demonstrate how your current values and judgment align with RCMP standards. Own it; do not run from it.

Current RCMP Officers and Cannabis

As of January 2024, RCMP members are permitted to use cannabis off-duty, provided they are not impaired when reporting for work or performing their duties. The previous 28-day abstinence requirement was replaced with a "fit for duty" standard — the same approach used by most Canadian police forces.
