Step 8 has two components that run in sequence: you must pass the Psychological Suitability Screening first, then proceed to the Medical Screening Process. If you do not pass the PSS, you do not advance to medical or to the field investigation.
The Three Components of the PSS
According to the RCMP, the Psychological Suitability Screening consists of three distinct elements:
1. Pre-Interview Questionnaire
Before your clinical interview, you complete a written questionnaire disclosing all past and present psychological conditions and concerns, as well as relevant health information. This includes:
- Any history of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other mental health diagnoses
- Past or current therapy, counselling, or psychiatric treatment
- Current and historical medications
- Any hospitalizations related to mental health
- Prior psychological or neuropsychological assessments
The RCMP is explicit: serious gaps, omissions, inconsistencies, or inaccuracies are grounds to terminate your application. This form becomes part of your permanent medical file and will be cross-referenced against your polygraph results, your background investigation, and what your references say. Disclose completely and accurately.
2. Standardized Psychological Testing
You will complete one or more standardized psychological tests — the same types used in clinical and occupational psychology. The RCMP does not publicly specify which instruments it uses, but Canadian law enforcement agencies commonly use tools such as the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), which measures a broad range of psychological traits and clinical indicators across hundreds of questions.

No Results, No Feedback
One detail that surprises many candidates: you will not receive the results of your Psychological Suitability Screening. You must sign a consent form acknowledging this before the assessment begins. No reports, no test results, no feedback from the psychologist.
This is standard for employment-based psychological assessments. The evaluation is commissioned by the RCMP as a suitability review — not a therapeutic or diagnostic process. You will know the outcome only by whether your application continues to move forward.
How to Prepare
There is no study guide for the psychological assessment, and you should be skeptical of anything claiming to let you "pass" it through scripted answers. The best preparation is genuine:
- Know your own history. Review any mental health history, past therapy or counselling, medications, and significant life events before completing the Pre-Interview Questionnaire. Being clear on your own timeline means consistent, accurate disclosure.
- Practice honest self-reflection. The clinical interview will ask how you have handled stress, conflict, trauma, and difficult decisions. Think through real examples — not fabricated stories, but honest accounts of how you have grown through challenges.
- Answer standardized tests authentically. Respond as you genuinely are, not as you imagine an ideal officer would. Attempts to construct a perfect profile typically backfire.
- Be consistent across all steps. Your suitability interview, polygraph, references, and PSS questionnaire should tell the same story. Small inconsistencies prompt deeper questioning.
- Show up rested and present. This is not a trivia test. Arrive calm and ready to engage honestly.
A Note on Mental Health and Stigma
Many candidates are reluctant to disclose past mental health treatment because they fear it will automatically end their application. That concern is largely unfounded for candidates who are genuinely stable today.
Seeking help for depression, anxiety, or grief — working through it and arriving at this process as a self-aware, stable person — is not a disqualifier. It can actually demonstrate the resilience and self-awareness the RCMP values. What the RCMP cannot tolerate is dishonesty. A candidate who discloses past counselling honestly and reflects thoughtfully on it is far better positioned than a candidate who hides the same history and is caught out during the background investigation or polygraph.
